“Marcus?” I called in shock and he smiled.
I shuddered and moved away from the door and he followed me in.
“Hello Charlene” he smirked
“Are you surprised?”
“What’re you doing here? What do you…”
Before I could finish up my statement, he landed a slap on my face
“How dare you think of acting this foolish? You ran away for years and suddenly return with the intention of f**king up the plan? What has gotten into you?” He snarled.
“Let me go, Marcus. I don’t have any connection with you. And no matter what you do, I’m still going to tell the truth. So, its better you kill me right here if you don’t want that to happen”,I said angrily and he fumed.
He fisted his hand and looked like he wanted to hit me, but restricted himself.
“Oh! Charlene”, he sighed
“You’re lucky you’re my favorite. Else, I swear, you’d have had your head rolling on the floor this very instant”
I scoffed and threw my face away.
“Well, as you can see, Marcus, i was on my way out. So, I’d really appreciate it if I leave” I said and tried reaching for the door but immediately, he gripped me from behind and brought out a syringe from his pocket.
“Marcus! What are you doing? Let me go!!” I struggled with him but he injected me with the syringe and I passed out.
A tear dropped from my eye as I sat on the bench, awaiting the strange lady. I was at the location where she had asked me to meet her and for almost an hour, there’s been no trace of her.
I couldn’t tell why exactly I was crying.
If it was a result of the strange lady who was delaying in coming. .
She had given me hope; made me feel there was something I needed to know about my family. So, why wasn’t she here? What happened?
Could it be possible she was just lying to me?
I bent head and sniffed.
Or maybe I was crying because of Rex.
Maybe I didn’t want to work as his maid. Why would he want me to become his maid? What’s gonna happen to me during my stay in the mansion?
And my family…will they ever let me go?
I checked the time and…gosh! It was extremely late. My family were definitely going to question my whereabouts. I needed to leave before I get into more trouble
I stood up with my bag and wiped my face.
I just felt bittered and confused.
I looked around but there was still no trace of her. What the hell happened?
And having one final thought, I finally left.
“Noah? Noah?” I heard mum call as she knocked on the door.
“You can come in”, I replied and she opened the door and walked in.
She was putting on a long pretty gown, obviously ready for the dinner.
“Here you are!” She called and came to meet me in front of the mirror.
I was fixing my buttons, but she collected it from me.
“You’re looking good, son” she complimented as she helped me with the buttons.
“Thanks” I smiled.
She focused on what she was doing and didn’t say a word for a while.
“Um…I’ve been wondering, about your father’s demands regarding the company, have you been able to find a wife?” She asked and I scoffed.
“That’s ridiculous, mum. I don’t have anyone in mind yet.” I replied.
“So, what are you gonna do? You have less than two weeks left. You need to find a wife, Noah”.
“I know…I just don’t have anyone in mind right now”.
I sighed and touched my head. She rounded up the buttons and went to my collars
“Well…I heard Mr Richard has two pretty daughters. Probably, you should be able to pick interest in one of them, don’t you think?” She asked with a wink and I rolled my eyes.
“Well, either way, Noah; you still need to find a wife” she shrugged and went to sit on the bed.
I sighed and reached for my hair brush, brushing my hair
“By the way, what do you think about this crazy dancer?” She asked, looking at the TV.
I smiled as I also looked at it.
“Well…she’s incredible” I muttered.
“Hmm.I wonder why she wears a veil”.
I got lost staring at her images again.
God! I wish I get to know her soon.
“Come on, Noah; we’re running late” mum urged me and I continued brushing my hair.
I gave my gorgeous self one final stare in front of the mirror before turning to look at mum. The make up artistes were still in the room.
“Mum, are you sure I’m good enough?” I asked nervously and she touched my cheeks
“Of course, Ruby. You look like a princess” she complimented and I blushed.
“You can leave” she turned to the make up artistes and said and they all left the room
“Ruby” she called lowly, holding my hand.
“Listen to me; this is a golden opportunity – a very rare one – and I want you to make good use of it. Someone like Noah coming to our house is just like the coming of Jesus Christ and I want you to make sure he doesn’t leave the same. You must capture his heart.
“So, I want you to remember the steps carefully. I’ve already planned with the maid and she knows what to do. While she’s trying to pour him some drink, she’d purposely spill some of it on his dress and after the nagging – of course – He’s gonna have to use the restroom and that’s where you come in.
“You’ll offer and insist on taking him to the guest room and when that happens, when you’re alone in the guest room,”
She paused and smiled.
“I’m sure you know what to do. Get him, Ruby! Get him!” She spoke with so much imbued enthusiasm in her voice.
“Do you understand?”
“Of course,,mum” I took in a deep breath and said.
“Good. Make sure you make me proud” she tapped my cheeks and said..
“But, mum…why’s Maxine not home? You know the plan was to make sure she stays in door till they leave. I don’t want them to see her – especially Noah.
“She should be back by now. What if she returns when we’re already together and eating? You know that girl can be totally hapless at times? I don’t want Noah to see her” I grumbled.
“Mmm. That’s true. Where the hell is she?” She placed her hand on her chin and asked.
Immediately, the door opened and Tammy showed up, looking like she wanted to fly.
“Mum! Ruby! They’re here!” She beamed in excitement and my nervousness increased.
Noah’s here already.
And Maxine’s not home!
They’re definitely going to meet.
